NYU-Prague sponsored a wide-ranging conference on the refugee crisis in Europe on Nov. 9. I spoke about U.S., U.K., and French news coverage of the crisis. My co-panelist was Czech journalist Tomas Lindner of the weekly magazine Respekt, which has provided excellent in-depth treatment of the issue. Salim Murad, an NYU-Prague faculty member, moderated the panel and documented the heavy and often sensationalistic coverage by other leading newspapers, despite the fact that the Czech Republic has to date accepted the asylum applications of only nine refugees.
Here is the program for the event and here is the complete livestream.
Thanks to NYU-Prague director Jiri Pehe and assistant director for academic affairs Vanda Thorne for inviting me to participate!
